GREEN BAG CONTEST WINNERS

No we don’t mean a bag made out of green fabric.  We mean a bag that is GREEN as in environmentally friendly.  We mean a bag that you can re-use so we can decrease the number of plastic bags that are used.  And we mean a bag you can make, so it can be a personalized one of a kind bag that is a statement of your taste.  We had a lecture demo to show how to make some bags and to provide some ideas.  An independent judge selected the winners for a prize.  The fabric used to make the bag had to be purchased at Sandi’s Sewing Connection but any pattern could be used.  We announced the winner on Wednesday March 17th, St Patrick’s Day, now how appropriate was that?  Each winner received a $55 store gift certificate.

OESD 2009 HOLIDAY CHALLENGE CONTEST

OESD had a 2009 Holiday Challenge Contest that featured three categories, Garments, Home Dec, and Quilting.  And, Sharon Brown won Third Place in the Quilting Category.

Sharon Brown from Fairfield, Iowa won Third Place for her Poinsettia & Holly Table Runner.  Sharon started out piecing her fabric out of 2½ inch squares in beautiful tones of white & wheat.  Only then did she begin the embroidery over the patchwork.  The central designs of elegant poinsettias intersperse with flirtatious little swirls and sprigs of holly. Traditional colors and patchwork paired with bright cheerful colors of embroidery give this table runner both an heirloom feel and a lively spirit.

Sharon Brown has a Bernina Artista 200 and is an avid sewer, mostly quilts and embroidery.  Her 7 year old granddaughter wanted to be able to sew with her grandma so Sharon bought her a machine for Christmas 2009.  She bought a Bernette 46 in early December and wanted to sew on it some to be familiar with it so she could help her granddaughter.  After sewing on it, she told us what a nice a machine she thought it was.  She gave it to her granddaughter for Christmas and obviously her granddaughter loves it.  Her granddaughter made the quilt pictured before they went home after Christmas.  And Sharon said that when they went home, the quilt was not packed away in the trunk but was in the back seat with Breanna.

Judy Goff made the football themed quilt below for her grandson.

The quilt below was made by Jeane Young.

The quilt below features embroidered sea life and was made by Ruby  Weber.  Note how she carefully pieced the background fabric to create a realistic looking background.

The quilt below was made by Jacqi McCandless with the "Juliette Ladies" design collection from Loralie Designs using her Bernina embroidery software and her Bernina 185 sewing/embroidery machine.
